Intel study: Solid state drives extend battery life
Von laptop, 09:24Intel has published a study that Solid State Drives (SSD) can be extended compared to conventional hard drives, the Dell inspiron 1525 battery life of notebooks. In a comparison test conducted by Intel a flash disk of the company has extended the useful life of a notebook on Dell Studio 1537 battery power by 32 minutes or 13 percent.
For the test, the manufacturer has HDD Laptops of 5400 U. / min, a HDD with 7200 U / and compared to a SSD from Intel and measured over a period of two hours the energy consumption of the drives. During this period, the traditional hard disks in only 10 percent of the time be put into sleep mode. The SSD equipped with the laptop, the proportion was 96 percent.
Knut Grimsrud, Director of Storage Architecture at Intel, said his company consider in developing energy-efficient flash drives the energy consumption per completed task. “We look at how much energy is needed to perform a specific job.” The investigations have shown that a slow SSD with a low energy consumption is not necessarily energy efficient. “You can not do the work in the same time as a fast SSD.” As a result, a fast SSD could be moved quickly into power saving mode.
To study the effects of the choice of the power scheme on the Dell Inspiron 6400 battery life under different load on the CPU, we have performed different measurements. First, we vary three consecutive measurements, the power options (power grids) and each measure the Dell xps m1330 battery life. We choose the scheme in each case so that the CPU is working once again with their minimum and the maximum clock, and automatic clock adjustment. generate the CPU load while a typical office application: one in an infinite loop running, typical Power Point presentation ensures that the CPU will be charged for the entire sample with a average over time to about 10 percent.
In another measurement, we stress the CPU with the help of the prime number calculation program Prime95 continuously and the maximum. As a power scheme this time we choose Portable / Laptop.
