six tips to extend laptop battery life

Interestingly enough, most laptop users rarely get even close to the advertised battery life on their laptops. Sony advertises 6 hours for their MacBooks; in real life use it only gets around 2-3 hours. And we always heard somebody says my laptop battery have broken,and the laptop battery just use a year.Why this discrepancy? Part of it is due to using way too many things that you don’t need.I don’t believe that the laptop battery have a cycle,one or two years it must to be replacement.I think if we protect the battery in a right way.It can last as long as possible.And thery are some tips to extend your laptop battery life.

1. Defrag regularly -  The faster your hard drive does its work – less demand you are going to put on the hard drive and your battery.  Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging  it regularly. (but not while it’s on battery of course!) Mac OSX is better built to handle fragmentation so it may not be very applicable for Apple systems.

2. Dim your screen – Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen.  Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance.Such as  Dell XPS M1530 battery and Dell Vostro 1510 battery. So remember to  cut them down to the lowest level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra battery juice.

3.Turn down screen brightness-Not much to say about this one. If you’re in a darker environment, you won’t need all the screen brightness that Mac laptops provide you with. Turn down the brightness with the dedicated buttons on your keyboard.

4.Change battery scheme to ‘better battery life’-When you stop using your laptop for a few minutes, you’ll probably want your Mac to turn off the screen and hard drive to save power. Make it do so more quickly by going to your menubar, and beneath the battery icon, choose “Better Battery Life”. (Again, if this isn’t on your menubar, you can access it from System Preferences->Energy Saver.)

5.Turn off Bluetooth-Another thing that uses power when you’re not using it, and should be turned off to preserve your battery life: Bluetooth. If it’s on your menubar like Airport should have been, just click the icon, and hit “Turn Bluetooth Off”. If for some reason you’ve disabled the menubar icon, head over to the Apple System Preferences, choose the Bluetooth preference pane, and there should be a large “Turn Bluetooth Off” button.

6. Prevent the Memory Effect – If you’re using a very old laptop, you’ll want to prevent the ‘memory effect’ – Keep the battery healthy by fully charging and then fully discharging it at least once every two to three weeks. Exceptions to the rule are Li-Ion batteries (which most laptops have such as Sony VGP-BPI1 and so on) which do not suffer from the memory effect.
